January 2011 I uncovered vital information on the REAL shelf life of medications. When you find out how Big Pharma has manipulated our purchasing habits, forcing us to buy medications to replace perfectly usable products, steam will sizzle from your ears. It certainly did from mine. Here is an excerpt from Chapter 15: The Real Shelf Life of Medications.

This information will likely make you angry after considering the money we've wasted by tossing out medications. According to Towers Perrin Health Cost Survey, prescription drugs in 2010 cost Americans $350 billion. This doesn't include aspirin, Pepto-Bismol, Claritin-D or any other over-the-counter medication. Add in these figures and the waste skyrockets. Now take that vast pile of money and visualize setting a match to it and then re-placing that stack every two years - the shelf life of most medications. Now burn it again.

To put this in perspective, think about how much is $1 billion. Most of us can grasp the magnitude of a million dollars, but how does a billion compare? If we paid $1 dollar for every second of every day, it would take 31 years, 259 days, 1 hour, 46 minutes and 40 seconds. Now multiply this by 350. Payoff morphs into a mind-blinding 11,098 years; 93 days; 22 hours; 13 minutes and 20 seconds. This payout occurs every two years just in America. Now factor in the costs of every other country. Are you mad yet? Pharmaceutical companies are putting the screws to everyone.

Twenty-six years ago the military became similarly concerned and looked to see how they could cut medical costs. Since they stockpile enormous quantities of meds to treat chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) problems, plus drugs for diseases and injuries, the dollars ratcheted up. By 1986, they had amassed $1 billion in meds that would soon have to be torpedoed. In today's dollars that number doubles though the real cost is likely much higher. Today, military personnel have to prepare for even more nasties since hostile countries are more inclined to use unconventional weapons.

If military drugs couldn't be purchased at better prices, maybe they were looking in the wrong direction. Were they throwing away drugs unnecessarily? The Pentagon decided to find out. When the Air Force approached the FDA to evaluate viability of pharmaceuticals, the Shelf Life Extension Program (SLEP) was formed in 1986. If you go to their website, information is highly guarded, but over the years physicians, universities and researchers have looked at this same issue and some of SLEP's findings have been published. Now you will have access to them.

OVERVIEW

A lot of people ask why the name Dare To Prepare. They understand "prepare" but "dare" is puzzling. Some think it's just a catchy title, but there's more. Those who choose to prepare have acknowledged, on some level, that things are changing all around us - rapidly. Sometimes it feels like it's more than we can deal with. We get overwhelmed thinking can I do this?

It's doubly difficult when one family member wants to be more self-sufficient and the other doesn't. This can lead to real frustration. However, reasons of time and money savings, unexpected company, natural and man made disasters, illness, corporate layoffs and downsizing, all underscore the necessity for having supplies set aside. Stored goods saw thousands through the 2000 recession.

Disasters don't go away simply because we want them to. In order to plan ahead, people must face this reality. THAT'S daring to prepare.

You have only to watch interviews with disaster victims to see how to "do it better". It was truly astounding when 2004's four back-to-back hurricanes hit Florida that people didn't consider A) moving out of harms way and B) getting necessary emergency preparedness items well in advance. Instead, even when storm four, Jeanne, arrived on Florida's doorstep people still didn't have plywood, batteries, water, food. With those harsh lessons, when "the mother of all hurricanes" - Katrina - people started to get the message. 2008's Gustav and Ike underscored the lesson.

2008 also brought horrific floods to the Midwest, reminiscent of 1993. Record rains submerged millions of acres of land and ruined millions of acres of crops. Reuters estimates the damages to be in multiple billions. Besides floods, many areas also were hammered by strong winds, severe storms, hail, and nearly 2,100 tornado reports. Areas that didn't see floods burned or shriveled with drought.

These same scenarios echoed around the planet.
